My work is inspired and influenced by my observations of plants and the sea, by its movement and also reflections in the water when calm.
I use white stoneware clay when creating my wavescapes and seascapes, mixing other coloured clays and under glaze colours, to get texture, creating movement and moods. I use the same technique with my reflections.
I like to experiment with my work and enjoy using materials such as recycled and granulated glass. I love line drawing, exaggerating the flowing lines and creating patterns to create abstract impressions of known areas and plants.
The ideas for my ceramic pieces I make, are from my collection of sketches and personal photographs.
The ceramics are hand crafted, usually slab built and wall mounted.
I use five birds as a signature on most of my work. They can be interpreted as seagulls or any bird. I got the idea from a well known German company that always has 9 stars on their Christmas angels. They can be interpreted as seagulls or any bird.
HISTORY
I was born in Brighton, moved to Bridlington, then Scarborough. I have lived near the sea most of my life.
I first experienced ceramics at school then at a Pre Diploma course at Scarborough Art College, and spent most of my second year specialising in ceramics in 1966-68.
I have rekindled my love of ceramics in the last few years. At first I went back to evening classes, then a group of us formed a ceramic club at St James Art Centre in Scarborough in 2008. Since then I have been concentrating on different aspects of hand built ceramics especially slab work and using recycled and granulated glass. I love to experiment with the different colours and mixing the two types of glass together.
I now show my work at
Woodend Scarborough,
Pomodoro Italian Restaurant, Eastborough, Scarborough.
Gala Café, Scarborough.
Bay View Café, Foreshore, Scarborough.
